This course challenges the assumption that terms like "Chinese," "Taiwanese," or "Kazakh" represent straightforward concepts. Via theories of identity, and careful attention to the history of China and Inner Asia, we will explore - and explode - the association of identity and descent, language and ethnicity, citizenship and nationality.
