Dental Materials

Master of Science in Dentistry

About

"Dental materials" refers to both the natural tissues found in the human body—such as enamel, dentin, and bone—and the biomaterials used to restore or replace teeth, including metals, ceramics, and composites.

By earning a Master of Science in Dentistry (M.S.D.) in dental materials, you'll expand your understanding of the materials used in clinical dentistry while opening career opportunities in science, research and development, engineering, quality and manufacturing, and sales. The additional credential can enhance your clinical practice or lead to roles in fabrication, education, and research—working with evolving technologies that improve material safety, product performance, and patient outcomes.

This two-year program is designed for applicants who hold a D.D.S., D.M.D., or an equivalent degree. (A separate track is available for individuals with non-dental backgrounds in specific engineering or chemistry disciplines.)

Graduates earn a Master of Science in Dentistry along with a clinical certificate in dental materials.

Courses begin in July, and your plan of study includes didactic and clinical coursework, oral and written qualifying exams, and a research project.

Apply through the IU Graduate School. Check the IU School of Dentistry website for application deadlines and more specific program information.

Take the next step in your career—specialize in dental materials.
