This course is an overview of African written traditions in their historical, social, and artistic contexts. Concepts covered include what constitutes African graphic writing systems and their use as visual art, markers of identity, religion, and moral philosophy. Civilizations covered include the Asante Bamum, Ejagham, Yoruba, and Kongo.
