Evolution, diversity, and history of microbial life on Earth. Examines all forms of microbial life, including prokaryotes, microbial eukaryotes, and viruses. Topics will include microbial diversity and importance, reconstructing the tree of life, evolutionary mechanisms, horizontal gene transfer, symbiosis, evolution of pathogenesis, and others.
