CEUS-R 552: PEOPLES AND CULTURES OF THE MIDDLE EAST (3 credits)

This ethnographic survey examines the social institutions and cultural forms in contemporary Middle Eastern societies - i.e., the Arab world, Israel, Turkey, Iran and Afghanistan. Topics include: ecology; Islam; pastoral nomadism, agriculture, and cities; colonialism and nation states; tribalism, ethnicity, and gender; and modernization, oil wealth, labor migration, and social unrest.
