In 1900 Mongolia was run by descendants of Genghis Khan and Buddhist lamas under China's last dynasty. In 1950 it was Soviet Russia's most loyal satellite, under the dictator Choibalsang. By 2000, Mongolia had become a democracy, with a struggling free-market economy. This course explores Mongolia's wrenching changes since 1900.
