This course surveys Islamic Central Asia from the 16th century to the Russian conquest: especially Chinggisid Uzbek states and the 'tribal' dynasties, but also East Turkestan to 1755, and nomadic Qazaqs, Qirghiz, and Turkmens. Themes include political institutions, legitimation, nomads and sedentaries, ethnic developments, religion and culture; sources and historiography.
