Course explores the role of religious figures and institutions in sanctioning, exercising, and/or underminding political authority in Islamic Central Asia. The course focuses on the political influence wielded by the local representatives of Islam's spiritual ideal, especially Sufi shaykhs and how they used their extraordinary socio-economical, and political power.
