Examines the intentions of language users and how discourse is interpreted by hearers. After introducing fundamental concepts in pragmatics, the course analyzes how pragmatics relates to syntax and semantics. Topics include: speech acts, deixis, presupposition, implicature, politeness, and conversation analysis. Examples are taken from different varieties of Spanish.
