Explore the law governing the right to vote in the U.S. Examine the way the law has shaped the structure of American political participation while simultaneously considering alternative directions American democracy might take. Begin with an overview of the restrictions on the franchise; residency requirements, discrimination on the basis of sex and race, and registration practices. Include the design of democratic institutions, the development of the one-vote, one-person doctrine; the constitutional role of political parties in our democratic system; representation of minority interests in democratic bodies; Voting Rights Act; and other issues.
