COAS-E 103: TOPICS IN THE ARTS AND HUMANITIES: THE ART AND CULTURE OF ELECTRONIC GAMING (3 - 4 credits)

About

Gaming has been a part of western culture since long before the Ancient Greek Olympics. The advent of the computer brought gaming into cyberspace. Companies like Atari and Nintendo and a host of others since have popularized video gaming as a tool not only for recreation but for education and the workplace. This course will offer broad insight into gaming through multiple perspectives: historical, technological, cultural, and artistic. Students will have the opportunity to conceptualize new games based on a variety of themes, patterns, and genres, to learn the impact of games and gaming technology on our culture, and to recognize how game technologies and techniques are used for purposes other than entertainment.
