DENT-D 520: RISK ASSESSMENT, PREVENTION, & EARLY MANAGEMENT OF DENTAL DISEASE (2 - 4 credits)

About

The dentist is the primary oral health care provider and as such, is responsible for providing prevention, intervention and educational strategies in health promotion for all patients. This course introduces students to the biofilm basis of common oral diseases, including caries and periodontal disease. Emphasis is placed on the assessment and identification of these diseases, and on the prevention and non-surgical therapeutics that are available for their treatment. Students develop skills in assessing patient's oral self-care and in improving patient self-care outcomes via oral hygiene education. Students will learn about the role of dentists in oral cancer prevention, including tobacco dependence therapy, assessment of oral cancer risk factors and oral cancer self-examinations.
