This course will examine Environmental Ethics as a means of exploring the underlying moral questions in environmental law and policy debates. Students will examine the philosophical frameworks essential to understanding environmental justice. Students will gain an appreciation of the competing societal interests at stake in environmental decision-making and the relationship of the civil rights movement in U.S. history to the birth of the environmental justice movement. Students will understand and characterize the relationship between economic development and environmental policy. Students will examine historical and contemporary environmental justice issues raised by communities and the legal avenues available to address those claims.
