Basic Theory/History I is the first component of a four-semester, comprehensive sequence in fundamental concepts of music theory, style practice, and associated historical contexts. Courses in this sequence provide an essential understanding of music, from major historical precedents to contemporary aesthetic practices. In this four-semester course sequence students develop significant skill and knowledge in several core areas as outlined by the following objectives:
An understanding of the general acoustic principles associated with music.
The ability to work effectively with pitch, rhythm, and harmony in a range of stylistic and cultural genres.
Development of musical notation and instrumentation skills.
Provide a meaningful analysis of key style practices and historic epochs that addresses both technical and design orientated criteria and its artistic and historical significance.
