Slavic East European Languages & Cultures
Offered at IU Bloomington by College of Arts and Sciences
About
Earning a major in Slavic and East European Languages and Cultures requires the study of at least one Slavic language. You also complete coursework that provides an in-depth knowledge of the region, choosing either the Russian or the Slavic track.
Our language options include Russian, Ukrainian, Czech, Polish, and Bosnian/Croatian/Serbian. We offer some courses on a more limited basis in Romanian and other Slavic languages. You become familiar with the literature and culture of your chosen language by working with texts in English translation.
Russian track
This track is designed for students seeking advanced study of the Russian language and/or Russian literature, culture, or film.
Slavic track
This track is designed for students seeking a basic knowledge of a Slavic language other than Russian, choosing among Czech, Polish, or Bosnian/Croatian/Serbian. You become familiar with your region's literature and culture in English translation. Students pursuing the Slavic track also either do work in a second Slavic literature or culture in English translation (including Russian) or study another Slavic language (including Russian).
