About
The Bachelor of Science in Physics provides focused training for students interested in graduate study, professional school, or bringing problem-solving and technical skills directly to industry, and includes possibilities for a formalized thesis or internship.
Students develop a sound foundation in the study of matter and energy, including their nature and properties. You'll learn theoretical and experimental approaches including Newtonian mechanics, oscillations and waves, bulk properties of matter, and thermodynamics.
Upper-level courses provide rigorous understanding of advanced analytical mechanics, electricity and magnetism, thermodynamics and statistical mechanics, radiation science, and quantum mechanics.
At all levels, physics also includes laboratory courses, and physics majors gain hands-on experience using advanced instruments and computing systems.
Traditional Physics Bachelor of Science degree – Program I
Our Physics B.S. Program I degree option offers a solid foundation in traditional physics. It provides many opportunities for career advancement and is an excellent precursor to graduate programs. The curriculum offers sufficient flexibility to allow students who make a "late" decision to major in physics to nonetheless complete their degree requirements in four years.
Applied Physics Bachelor of Science degree – Program II
We offer an alternative degree curriculum to traditional physics through the Applied Physics B.S. Program II option. This practical program prepares you for high-tech jobs in industry and medicine and is an excellent precursor to graduate programs in engineering and other physics applications.
