Bachelor of Arts

About

Students working toward the Bachelor of Arts in English choose a concentration in one of two areas: Literature, Film, and Popular Culture or Creative Writing:

  • Literature, Film, and Popular Culture: This encompasses courses in British, American, and popular, contemporary, and/or world literature and film, offered through a mix of seated and online classes. Gain insight about the human condition and hone analytical and writing skills as you cover major authors and periods depicted through past and recent works. You'll start with ENG-L 260 Introduction to Advanced Study of Literature, then move on to ENG-L 371 Introduction to Critical Practices, and from there to a selection of courses.
  • Creative Writing: This offers a foundation of literary knowledge along with development of craft and style in poetry, fiction, and nonfiction. You'll take a selection of literature courses, including ENG L260 and ENG L371, but also ENG W260 Introduction to Creative Writing and upper-level genre-specific creative writing courses, such as ENG W303 Writing Poetry and ENG W301 Writing Fiction. You can also gain real-world editing and publishing experience by taking ENG W280 Literary Editing and Publishing and joining the editorial staff of Tributaries, our campus creative arts journal (optional but recommended).

Both concentrations culminate in a required internship (ENG Y398).
