Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery (Residency)

Graduate Certificate in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery

About

Oral and maxillofacial surgeons are highly trained specialists who treat diseases, repair injuries, and perform complex procedures involving the face, jaw, neck, and mouth. Their work ranges from extractions and implants to reconstructive jaw surgery, cleft palate repair, bone and gum grafting, and sleep apnea surgery.

As a resident in this four-year Graduate Certificate in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery program, you'll develop the skills necessary to perform both routine oral surgeries and advanced procedures addressing congenital facial conditions, facial trauma, head and neck cancer, TMJ disorders, and more.

This career path is among the most lucrative in dentistry—but also one of the most competitive, demanding, and rewarding.

Courses begin in July and include didactic coursework and clinical rotations across a variety of Indianapolis-based hospitals and healthcare systems. Rotations include anesthesia and pediatric anesthesia, medicine, general surgery, trauma surgery, oral pathology, head and neck surgery, and intensive care.

To be eligible, you must rank in the top 25 percent of your dental school class and take the National Board of Medical Examiners Comprehensive Basic Science Examination. U.S. or Canadian citizenship is required.

Qualified applicants should apply through the American Dental Education Association Postdoctoral Application Support Service (ADEA PASS) and the Postdoctoral Dental Matching Program.

Visit the ADEA website for details on the application cycle and consult the IU School of Dentistry's website for additional program information.
