About
"Dental materials" refers to both the natural tissues found in the human body—such as enamel, dentin, and bone—and the biomaterials used to restore or replace teeth, including metals, ceramics, and composites.
By earning a Master of Science (M.S.) in Dental Materials, you'll deepen your understanding of materials used in clinical dentistry while opening doors to diverse career paths in science, research and development, engineering, quality and manufacturing, and sales.
Specialists in this field who are not practicing dental professionals find roles in fabrication and industry, education, and research laboratories—working with evolving technologies that improve material safety, product performance, and patient outcomes.
Applicants should have a background in chemistry or engineering (biomedical, materials science, or mechanical) plus research experience. This two-year graduate program is designed for individuals who do not have a doctorate in dentistry (a separate D.D.S. track is available).
