About
A career in health information technology combines the disciplines of medicine, information management, computer technology, finance, and law within the health care industry. The registered health information technician (R.H.I.T.) performs a variety of technical health information functions, including the following: analyzing and evaluating health information for accuracy, compiling administrative and health statistics, coding diagnoses as well as procedures for reimbursement and databases, and creating disease registries for researchers. To become certified, students in the health information technology program must successfully complete IU Northwest degree requirements for an associate of science in health information technology and pass the certification examination administered by the national professional association, the American Health Information Management Association. Successful completion of this exam allows the individual the designation of R.H.I.T. The Health Information Technology program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Health Informatics and Information Management Education (CAHIIM).
