Master of Music

About

The Master of Music degree is intended for students holding a bachelor's degree in music (B.A., B.M., B.M.E., etc.). It combines a high level of performance study with coursework that emphasizes academic research.

Placement tests and a writing sample are required.

A student with a bachelor's degree in a non-music field may become a candidate for the Master of Music degree by demonstrating competence in performance in an academic music subject at the appropriate level or by completing additional undergraduate music courses, performance or academic, that may be required by the music faculty.

Concentrations are offered in Performance and Composition.

Master of Music - Performance

A successful audition is required in the student's chosen area of performance; piano, voice, orchestral instrument, composition. Please contact the Director of Graduate Studies for specific audition requirements.

After successfully completing an audition and before beginning coursework on the Master of Music degree, each student will take graduate placement examinations in music history, theory, aural skills, keyboard skills, and diction (voice students only). These exams can also be offered online. Prospective students may contact the Chair of the Department of Music for general information about the format and content of these examinations.

Master of Music - Composition

The Master of Music in Composition is offered in traditional and low-residency formats. Individually tailored composition labs aid composers in furthering their composition and entrepreneurial skills to advance their portfolios and professional careers. The MM in Composition is designed to aid composers in developing a personal voice through private instruction and supporting theory/analysis courses. Student composers work with campus ensembles and professional groups to explore new directions in their compositions.
