Bachelor of Science in Computer Science

About

This degree is taught online.

The 100% online Bachelor of Science in Computer Science degree is taught collaboratively at IU Southeast and four regional campuses. Students enroll through their home campus. The program focuses on the theory and practice of computing and its applications. It includes courses covering topics such as programming languages, data structures, algorithms, software engineering, artificial intelligence, computer architecture, operating systems, networks, databases, and more.

The main goal of a computer science degree is to equip students with the skills and knowledge to design, develop, and analyze software systems that solve real-world problems. Students learn how to use various tools and techniques to create efficient, reliable, secure, and user-friendly software products. They also learn how to communicate effectively with other programmers, clients, and users.

There are two concentrations available in the B.S. in Computer Science program: information systems and science and mathematics.

Information systems

The information systems concentration prepares students for careers in the design, implementation, and management of information systems. Information systems management involves planning, organizing, directing, controlling, and evaluating the activities and resources related to information systems. Within this concentration, students select courses that prepare them for careers in areas such as applications programming, business systems design and implementation, and information systems management.

Science and mathematics

The science and mathematics concentration prepares students for careers focused on the technical areas of computer applications. Within this concentration, students may select courses that prepare them for careers in areas such as systems software design and implementation or scientific computing applications.

Both concentrations prepare students for graduate study in computer science.
